A Little Bit About Us
The Maui Comic Con is the first of its kind; a free-to-the-public comic convention, created by locals for locals. The goal of the Maui Comic Con is to bring the thrill of meeting comic industry legends and discovering new local talent without putting a strain on the budgets of kama’aina. It was founded in 2016 by two friends; Alika Seki and Kenneth Gardner. They had both met a few years earlier, shortly before Alika opened the first comic shop on Maui in a decade – Maui Comics and Collectibles.
At the time Ken was working at Lahaina Cannery Mall and was wondering why a comic convention had not happened on Maui ever before. Ken approached the mall’s management about holding a comic convention. Despite the management not knowing what it was, they agreed to host the first comic convention on Maui. Ken approached Alika soon after for help putting it together. Fortunately, Alika had been planning on starting a convention since opening his comic shop 2 years prior and had a solid game plan already in place. Ken gave the convention its name and history was made. Maui finally had a comic convention!
In 2016 the first Maui Comic Con was planned and executed in less than 3 months in thanks to the local collector and creative communities that came together as one to make it happen. The Hawaiian Comic Book Alliance, a cadre of local creators, filled most of the artists’ alley. Local vendors and sponsors from Maui supported the event whole heartedly and provided much of the budget required to bring in the headlining guests. And local fans banded together and volunteered to help and make sure the convention ran smoothly.
In 2017 the convention moved to a new location at the University of Hawaii, Maui College on the Kahului campus. Thanks in large part to supportive student groups and on-campus non-profit groups the convention developed a new dimension to its identity; educational outreach. Each year the convention continues to grow. In August of 2018 the Maui Comic Con became a 501(c)(3) non-profit group.

Kenneth Gardner (Co-Founder)
Proud to be born in Maui, I discovered the comic book New Mutants around the age of 6. I became passionate about collecting comic books and enjoying all the amazing stories. I was particularly drawn to the artistry and storytelling. I now work in retail and resale. I cherish the friendships made at Maui Comic Con and the growth that Maui's witnessed among fellow comic book enthusiasts.

JASON “PHORMAT” DAVID (SECRETARY)
...and then there is Phormat. Jason David (lovingly referred to as Phormat), is the Board Secretary for the Maui Comic Con. It is his responsibility to document the numerous meetings held throughout the year and though it was a position he didn't initially care for, his approach to the task has been that of the event's lorekeeper and historian. It's his love of puzzles that often sees him solving problems in the background that only a few even knew took place. It is often said that Phormat gives the best hugs. Of the Nerd hierarchy, Phormat is most definitely a Gamer with Weeb tendencies. He enjoys Japan as a culture, writing short stories when inspiration strikes, and falling asleep at the keyboard.

Ever the go-getter, she does her best to find solutions to problems, streamline procedures and practices and find new avenues for promotion and fundraising. Mostly, she prides herself on her self-deprecating humor to lighten the mood when Alika begins to pull his hair out. Francine believes she is fulfilling a life debt to the convention. This occurred at the first Maui Comic Con where she participated, for her first time as an artist promoting her self-published work. “It changed my life. GANNON GILMORE (BOARD MEMBER)
Many things have been said of Gannon Gilmore. Some of those things are true. Some are falsehoods. Some are epic tales of adventure and mystery. Of all that has been said about him, only the following can be proven; he runs an all-ages music organization called Luktown, manages and performs in a band no one wants to hear called The Minorities, and threatens to inundate the world with a comic book called Harlowe with Mulberry Groove artist Todd Bernardy.
